Located in the North Caucasus, Dagestan is a federal territory known to the world as The Republic of Dagestan. Dagestan is ethnically very diverse (it is Russia’s most heterogeneous republic, where no ethnic group forms a majority) with several dozen ethnic groups and subgroups inhabiting the republic. Geographically, Dagestan exists in the most southern Russia which is surrounded by the North Caucasus mountains.
