Colombia is the country which is recognized in the lovely planet for its diversified geography specifically the Andes and the Amazon. This Latin American country is connected to the Central America by the Isthmus of Panama. The country has overall mixed demo-graphical trend in the population and the official language of the country is Spanish.
The traditional dress of Colombia is iconic in Latin America being diversified in nature and having bright and colorful tendencies.
The indigenous population of the native tribes of the Amazon like other Amazon people in other Latin American countries used to wear very short coverings. Most of them have very simple modes of clothing as the women pick, card, and spin wool and cotton while men do the weaving of the cloth. Clothing for men consists of a tunic and simple pants tied with a string at the waist. Clothing for women consists of a single length of cloth wrapped around their bodies as a dress.
The Quechua women of Colombia traditionally wear the mixed style dresses of Pre-Spanish and Spanish Colonial era. The most distinctive part of men’s clothing is the hand-woven poncho. Nearly every Quechua man and boy has a poncho, generally red in colour decorated with intricate designs.
The traditional dressing of Kuna women consists of hand-made blouses known as “molas” with skirts. Their dresses are sewn with a reverse appliqué technique. The women also colorize their faces and noses with a special paint which they prepare from achiote seeds. The Kuna men wear a traditional Kuna shirt with pants, jeans, or shorts.
The Sombrero Vueltiao is a traditional turned hat of Colombia which has the iconic importance in the Colombian national heritage. The Colombians prepare the hat with a typical cane which is grown in Colombia and it is so skillfully made that it can be bend easily with lots of flexibility.
The making of Sombrero Vueltiao was originated by the indigenous people of Zanu tribe and nowadays the Cumbia dance performers and the Vallenato artists traditionally wear is as an integral part of their costumes.
In the Andes region of Colombia, the native people also wear Ruana which is an outer garment, usually a very thick and sleeveless square or rectangular blanket which is traditionally made with wool. Many ruanas are handcrafted with sheep’s virgin wool. Ruana can be easily understood as being a knee-long cape wrapped around one shoulder and loosely draped over the other.
In Colombia, like other Latin American countries having the Spanish influence, many women also wear the traditional Pollera in the festive occasions and wedding ceremonies.
The dress is made with different fabrics and it is embellished with beautiful floral patterns. Traditional polleras come from peasant dress from southern Spanish regions, like Andalucía.
Although the modern men of Colombia have adopted the western style of clothing, yet the traditional Colombian men also wear white, beige, cream or ecru colored Liqui Liqui which is normally made of linen or cotton cloth.
