Singapore is an island city-state off the southern end of Malaysia. It has a great contrast between lots of nature and lots of defined city life. When you visit Singapore there is plenty to do.
One great thing about Singapore is the food. The local focus on delicious food means that there will lots of it for you to try, pretty much anywhere you might turn. A food items that’s commonly referred to as the “national dish” of Singapore is the chicken rice. It’s generally served as some of sort of oiled rice topped with boiled or steamed chicken and topped with cucumber. To switch things up the flavor department you will want to taste a variety of different dipping sauces. You can find chicken rice at pretty much any where food is served, including hawker stalls and food courts.
Another signature dish of Singapore that he highly requested by visitors is the chili crab. There are more than a dozen different ways that the crab is popularly prepared, but the chili version remains the most popular. Basically the crab is prepared with a spicy tomato chili gravy. It can be a bit of a mess to eat, but it’s very delicious. Some of the other popular ways that the crab is prepared include being peppered with black pepper, baked with cheese, or with a salted egg yolk.
One attraction in the city that should not be missed is the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The botanic gardens is a Unesco World Heritage Site that was established in 1860. There are over 300 species of vegetation in the garden and many of them are now considered rare outside of the garden. The garden has a wide variety of plants including a rainforest section, an orchid garden, and even has themed gardens and lakes to enjoy.
The orchids are there thanks to an orchid breeding program that was started in 1928. There are over 1,000 different species of orchids and 2,000 hybrids, of which 600 are currently on display to the public.
You might also consider taking a cruise down the Singapore river. It’s a great way to get a view of the city from a small distance, and cover a lot of ground while you’re just relaxing on the boat.
The Singapore zoo is another fun spot. It’s uniquely beautiful since its enclosires are very natural looking and there are a lot of free roaming animals. It feels more like you’re getting a true up close look at the animals in their natural element and less like you’re at a zoo. There are about 2,800 animals that live there. There is also a great interactive park area for the kids and a farmyard with pony rides. There are also shows with animals like elephants, even though they are looked down upon by many animal rights activists.
To get a free of Singapore from above, take a ride in the Singapore Flyer which is an observation wheel that’s even taller than the London Eye. The 30 minute ride gives you panoramic views of the city and beyond.
