Waterfalls can be incredibly powerful and interesting sites. Here are some of the most amazing waterfalls in the world.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is considered the largest waterfall in the world and borders Zimbabwe and Zambia on the Zambezi River. It gets the name Victoria because a Scotsmen “discovered” the falls in 1855 and named it after the queen. It’s not actually the tallest waterfall, but it’s setup creates the largest single sheet of falling water out of any of the waterfalls.

Ventisquero Falls

Ventisquero Falls is at the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, Chile. The water in the waterfall flows from a 50,000 year old glacier, that was only discovered in 1875. How many falls and the exact location of them changes due to weather conditions and where the glacier is situated at a given time.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls in Ontario Canada are one of the more popular falls out there. It’s actually made up of three different waterfalls called Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The falls are currently awaiting a vote that could temporarily dry them up for a period of time in an effort to replace some of the pedestrian bridges. It would take about six months to make the proposed changes.

Angel Falls

The Angel Falls in Auyantepui Venezuela is 3,212 feet high which makes it the tallest falls in the world. The spot has been identified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s named after a guy named Jimmie Angel who flew over it and crashed on top. It took him eleven days to walk down to the bottom.

Pearl Shoal

The Pearl Shoal falls are located in the Sichuan Province of China. The lakes in the area are quite clear and colorful so the overall effect of the waterfall with the limestone walls is quite interesting.

Sutherland Falls

The Sutherland Falls are located in Milford Sound New Zealand. The falls are one of the tallest in the world at 1,904 feet, which comes pouring out of a mountain lake. According to some people at least. Others believe that the Browne Falls are actually taller. Either way the waterfall is quite a sight and falls in three different cascades down the side of the mountain.

Taughannock Falls

The Taughannock Falls are located in Tompkins County New York. They are located in a state park and you can hike to them but swimming is not allowed.

Gullfoss

The Gullfoss falls are located in the Hvita River in Iceland. The name means “Golden Falls” in Icelandic and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.

Yosemite Falls

The Yosemite Falls in Yosemite Valley California are the highest measured waterfall in North America. You might not want to go near the water however. According to the legend of the Ahwahneechee people, the pool at the bottom is inhabited by witches. It’s a beautiful place though.
