Sarajevo Film Festival is the most important event of cinematic art held in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The festival was started during the war time (1995, when Sarajevo was under siege) with the intent to promote regional cinematography of Balkan region.
Today it is a major European event on film and cinematic art and attracts participation from all major film industries of the world. Sarajevo Film Festival encourages cultural exchange through the best cinema presentations of the world. It is also recognized by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) as a Competitive Specialized Festival.
Every year, international and local celebrities from cinema participate in this colorful event. Normally it is held in the month of August. Feature films, documentary films and many other small films are displayed on this occasion. Since its inception, Sarajevo Film Festival has attracted tremendous number of visitors.
It is also important to mention about Sarajevo Talent Campus which is now an important source of learning for emerging film talents specially for this region of the world. This talent hunt program has listed Sarajevo as one of the top film festivals in the world and it is an auxiliary step to encourage the young film talents.
The Sarajevo Film Festival awards include Best Film, Honorable Mention, Audience Award, Best Short Film and many others. The Sarajevo film festival winner Danis Tanovic’s ‘No Man’s Land’ won the Oscar in US. In 2004 the best movie was named as ‘The Heart of Sarajevo’.
