At 20,320 ft, Denali (Alaska’s Mt. McKinley) is considered to be one of the most difficult climbs in the world. Characterized by dangerous avalanches, treacherous crevasses, steep slippery icy slopes and high altitude blizzards with gale force winds, it is not uncommon for temperatures in winter to plummet below minus 100 degrees. With an annual climbing success rate of only 30-40%, it remains one of the most dangerous and difficult climbs on Earth. It has more vertical rise from the base to the summit than Mount Everest.

Denali (The High One) is the Native (Athabascan) American word for North America’s highest peak, Mount McKinley in the mountain chain called the Alaska Range. Denali was renamed Mount McKinley for William McKinley, a nominee for president, by the Princeton graduate and gold prospector, William Dickey. Dickey was one of the hundreds of prospectors seeking gold in the 1896 Cook Inlet stampede. He had written an article for the New York Sun where he described the mountain as the highest in North America at over 20,000 feet. The first winter ascent was made by Dave Johnston, Ray Genet & Art Davidson; the title of their book says it all: ‘Minus 148°’. The landmark achievement, which opened Denali or Mount Mckinley to a larger group of climbers, was Bradford Washburn’s 1951 expedition, which reached the summit of Denali via the West Buttress. Washburn’s team, using a plane fitted with skis to access the Kahiltna Glacier, pioneered the most popular route on the mountain.

Denali National Park and Preserve has much more than Mount McKinley to offer visitors. Wildlife of Denali and dramatic scenery are its most dependable attractions. Visitors taking the shuttle bus ride from the park entrance to Wonder Lake will see a lot of both. They can count on seeing caribou, with a good likelihood of seeing grizzly bears — almost certainly in the distance, but perhaps from very close range — , moose and dall sheep. There’s plenty of other wildlife, too, including eagles and wolves.
