There are tons of good hiking spots in the country, but some are better than others. In 2012 it was estimated by the Outdoor Industry Association that more than 34 million Americans went hiking, and it has been growing in popularity over the years. Hiking might be a popular past time since anyone can do it with minimal equipment, and yet even the most experienced hikers will never get bored with so many challenging hikes to take and beautiful nature sites to see on their way. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, here are some of the best places to go hiking in the United States.
Yosemite
Yosemite National Park is a hiker’s dream. The valley area is the more popular area for hikes, but the backcountry is great as well if you know your way around a map. Horseback riding and bicycles are also permitted in certain areas.
Jackson Hole
Jackson Hole Wyoming has hiking routes for pretty much any level of fitness, and with the Grand Tetons in the background for photo ops it’s pretty hard to do wrong at all. One unique hiking option in Jackson Hole is taking the tram to the top of the mountain and then starting a hike from there, which allows you to see the view from the top without spending the time hiking all the way up. (Which is 4,000 feet up.)
Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park in Northwestern Montana has over 700 miles of hiking trails, and 60 different routes to choose from. The park is full of streams and wildlife. The area is also great for whitewater adventures and fly fishing, both of which can be done with guides.
Sedona
Sedona Arizona is different than a lot of popular hiking spots thanks to its desert landscape. Much of its red rock formation look almost other worldly. You can go to Red Rock State Park, and you can also check out the Hopi villages in the Palatki Heritage Site. The weather can get pretty hot in Arizona, so be mindful to pack as much water as you could need and try to avoid the glaring midday sun during the summer.
Adirondacks
TheĀ Adirondacks in upstate New York have 46 peaks and over 2,000 miles of hiking trails. In this area you have the option of camping but also making use of luxury cabins and accommodations.
The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon has hiking trails that are like no other. Both sides of the rim offer great views of the canyon below. The Grand Canyon has been known to test even the best hikers however, so it’s important to be prepared for the longevity of the chosen hike and the climate when you do so. The area is pretty remote which can make it seem even more challenging.
Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park has over 1,000 miles of hiking trails on 2,000 acres. Many consider the hiking to be best during the fall season. Overnight trips require a permit, but day hikes do not. There are campgrounds available within the park.
